Showcase: using storytelling in learning

Crowd-sourced stories to promote customer care

Storytelling is a really powerful tool as it turns the abstract into reality and helps people to connect emotionally to the events of the story.

I used storytelling to create microlearning for a problem-solving learning campaign. The learning outcome is: explain why problem-solving matters for our customers.

In order to make the problems lifelike, people working in stores sent me some of their stories of solving customer problems. If I were collecting the stories again however, I would make more of a social media campaign about it, perhaps connected to The Warehouse Groups’s monthly awards.

For context, The Warehouse Group is New Zealand’s largest retailer and is made up of (at the time, four distinct brands: The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Noel Leeming (Technology and Appliances) and Torpedo 7 (Outdoor Gear). The brands have their own distinct identity that they are fiercely proud of but the leaders wanted to foster a sense of belonging between the brands. The landing page allows for learners to select which brand story they want to read.

I used the scenario blocks in Rise360 to create these stories. I wanted to avoid having the people as there were only a few that were appropriate for TWG and I had already used quite a few.

Noel Leeming: Janey needs a new phone

Warehouse Stationery: Avoiding further injury

The Warehouse: finding the perfect ring

I finish the learning with a key takeaway:

“It’s moments like this when we do what matters most for our customers. When we innovate and solve their problems. When we exceed their expectations with pride.

It’s experiences like these that turn the occasional shopper into lifelong customers.”
