Coaching your team

Scenario-based learning to practice coaching in 15 minutes

The module aim

Across New Zealand’s largest retail chain, the Warehouse Group, there were a lot of inexperienced Store Managers lacking some fundamental leadership skills. This module aimed to equip newly promoted or inexperienced Store Managers with the skills to coach their team.

The design

The L&D team worked with Store Managers and the People Performance Trainers to identify a store manager curriculum. Store Managers are busy people with a lot of responsibilities, and often don’t have much time for professional development. It had to be an engaging, bitesize module that could instantly be applied.

A man standing in an electronics store with a speech bubble asking "Next up: one of your new team members doesn't know how to use the system. Do they need coaching?" There are yes and no buttons to click.

I built this interactive branching scenario module to take learners through the what, when and how of coaching. The module should only take 15 minutes to complete and ended with a “learning by doing” section. Learners are presented with short challenges to immediately put into practice what they’ve learnt. Each challenge takes less than 10 minutes and is able to be completed on the shop floor.
